Car insurance for drivers with points

Despite everyone’s best efforts, the fact is that every year in the UK millions of drivers have their licences endorsed with points for either speeding or other driving infringements.

Depending on the severity of the traffic infringement committed it may or may not attract points, however if there are points loaded onto your licence you can expect to find your insurance premiums going up, the question that many people want to know is by how much.

The best way to determine how much extra insurance will cost for drivers with points, is by getting quotes from insurance companies firstly without mentioning points and then asking what the premium will be if you do have points. This method has been used to work out the average increase in premium stated below.

Five years ago in 2004 when the first survey of insurance companies offering car insurance for drivers with points was carried out it was determined that after picking up two speeding tickets a driver in the UK could expect to pay around 35% more than if they had not picked up the tickets. This increase is more than a third more than the original premium which I hope drives home the point that speeding is not a good idea when it comes to car insurance.

When the same test was carried out two years ago the results were significantly different with an increase in premium of only 25% on average, this would indicate that the stance of the insurance industry has softened towards speeders. The alternative to this assumption could be that the insurance industry has raised premiums across the board to take into consideration the fact that most people do speed.

So with both surveys you can see that there is a significant increase in premium over drivers with no points. With this being the case there may be some people with points who consider omitting that fact when taking out insurance in order to get lower premiums, this might seem like a good idea at the time but the truth of the matter is that in the event of an accident it is likely that the insurance company will find out and decide not to pay.

The good news is that insurance companies are only interested in traffic infringements that you’ve committed in the previous five years so provided that you can keep your nose clean for five years your premiums will eventually return to normal.
